HMRC aims to "transform working practices" with move to mobile working

Two new proposed tenders aim to simplify mobile working through use of the cloud

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs is looking to spend £215m on two digital transformation projects which will enable more mobile working via cloud services.

The tax authority has launched prior information notices seeking to engage with the market over two new proposed tenders.

The first, worth an estimated £200m, would cover the supply and maintenance of support for end user devices, apps, software and virtual desktop technology. The second, worth £15m, could see a wholesale transition to a cloud-based office productivity and collaboration solution.

The larger tender will cover the build, deployment, maintenance and support of end user devices, including mobile devices, as well as managing relationships with vendors.

It will also cover ongoing maintenance of anti-virus protection for devices, and application packaging and deployment.

In addition, any new supplier would be asked to manage and support administrative infrastructure including Active Directory, LDAP Directory Services, Forefront Identity Manager.

Duties would also include the management and support of servers relating to the scope of the managed desktop procurement, plus remote access and virtual desktop services.

The second tender would cover cloud-based office productivity and collaboration tools.

"Transitioning to a cloud based solution is expected to yield material commercial benefits, the adoption of which will simplify the existing desktop environment. It is also expected to transform working practices helping to improve current processes," the department said.

The solution would cover email, calendar, document sharing, video conferencing, instant messaging, document storage.

The service will be accessed from the department’s Windows-based desktop estate with 87,000 devices and 75,700 users.
