New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via our colleagues on Dods People


Government departments

  • Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Matthew Hedges has been appointed Her Majesty's Ambassador to Paraguay.
  • Department for Work and Pensions: Susan Park appointed as Director-General, Universal Credit Operations.
  • Department for Culture, Media and Sport: BBC Board – David Clementi appointed as Chair for four years.
  • Prime Minister’s Office: James Slack appointed to replace Helen Bower as Official Spokesperson.
  • Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy: Bryan Sanderson appointed interim chair of the Low Pay Commission, succeeding Sir David Norgrove.

All-Party Parliamentary Groups

  • Alternative Investment Management, Assistive Technology, General Aviation and Vegetarianism and Veganism groups have been newly added to the register.
  • Community Development in Europe, Dairy, Deafness, Freight Transport, Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Libraries, Oral Hormone Pregnancy Tests and Save the Pub groups have been returned to the register.


House of Lords

  • Lord Carter of Barnes now sits as Non-Affiliated, he was Labour.

By-election Results February 16

  • Cheshire East Council – James Nicholas elected for Bollington – Bollington First gain from Conservative.
  • Dudley Council – Shaneila Mughal elected for St Thomas’s – Labour hold.
  • East Staffordshire Council – Helen Hall elected for Burton – Liberal Democrat hold.
  • Forest of Dean Council – Sid Phelps elected for Lydbrook and Ruardean – Green gain from UKIP.
  • Oldham Council – Paul Jacques elected for Failsworth East – Labour hold.
  • Uttlesford Council – Garry Lecount and Petrina Lees elected for Elsenham and Henham – Residents for Uttlesford gain from Liberal Democrat.

Industry, charities & think tanks

  • Association of School and College Leaders – Geoff Barton elected to become General Secretary, starting April 18.
  • Thoroughbred Breeders' Association – Claire Sheppard appointed as Chief Executive.
  • Royal Blind and Scottish War Blinded - Richard Hellewell to stand down as Chief Executive of the two charities in July.
  • Green Alliance – Shaun Spiers named as the new Chief Executive, replacing Matthew Spencer on June 5.
