May Spads' parliamentary bids blocked

Two of Theresa May's special advisers have been prevented from standing for Parliament because they refused to campaign for the Conservatives in the Rochester and Strood by-election.

Nick Timothy and Stephen Parkinson reportedly defied a Downing Street edict to take part in telephone canvassing prior to last month's poll over concerns that doing so would breach the special advisers' code of conduct.

The chair of Aldridge-Brownhills Conservative Association has now written to Tory party chairman Grant Shapps protesting at "concerning and completely unacceptable" allegations that local party members were "deliberately misled" by CCHQ, who had earlier claimed that Mr Timothy had voluntarily withdrawn his candidacy for the seat.

Both special advisers are understood to have the full backing of the Home Secretary in the row.
