The government has sold off its entire stake in the Eurostar train franchise, earning the Exchequer £757m.

Ministers said the deal represented a marked improvement on expectations when the offering was first revealed in October last year.

The government's 40% stake will be taken on by Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and Hermes Infrastructure for £585.1m, with a further £172m coming from Eurostar on redemption of the Treasury's preference share.

Chancellor George Osborne described the sale as a “fantastic deal for UK taxpayers that exceeds expectations”.
