New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via our colleagues at Dods People

UK government

  • Prime Minister's Office – Mohammed Saddiq appointed as Her Majesty's lord-lieutenant of the County of Somerset from 29 October, succeeding Annie Maw CVO who is retiring. 
  • Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy: Government Office for Science – Sir Patrick Vallance to stand down as government chief scientific adviser at the end of his five-year post in April 2023. 
  • Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport: Historic Royal Palaces – Carole Souter appointed as interim chair from 1 August until 4 July 2023, or until a new substantive chair has been appointed, whichever is sooner. 
  • Department for Education: Student Loans Company – Charlotte Moar and Stephen Tetlow re-appointed as board members for two years and nine months from 7 August. 
  • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Broads Authority (Norfolk) – Tony Grayling appointed for four years. Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Conservation Board – Joseph Stewart appointed for three years; Colin Courtney, Paul Mainds, John Nicholls and John Shaw re-appointed for three years. Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Conservation Board – Katherine Chesson and Ellie Fujioka appointed for three years; Brendan Costelloe and Graham Hopkins re-appointed for three years; Ed Macalister-Smith’s appointment extended until 31 March 2023. Lake District National Park Authority – James Stuart appointed for four years. North York Moors National Park Authority – Ann Allen and Christine Robertson appointed for four years; Patrick James re-appointed for four years. Northumberland National Park Authority – Fiona Gough re-appointed for one year; Jean Davidson re-appointed until 9 June 2023. Peak District National Park Authority – Ken Smith re-appointed for four years. Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority – Lizzie Bushby appointed for four years; Julie Hutton re-appointed for four years. 
  • Department of Health and Social Care: NHS Resolution – Mike Pinkerton’s term as interim chair has been extended from 1 July until 30 September, or until a new chair is appointed, whichever is sooner. 
  • Ministry of Justice: Sentencing Council – Lord Justice William Davis appointed as chairman for three years from 1 August; Richard Wright QC appointed as non-judicial member for three years from 1 August. 
  • Department for Transport – Miles Dorrington appointed as acting traffic commissioner for the West Midlands from 22 August. 
  • Government Actuary's Department – Ian Wilson re-appointed as non-executive director for three years until August 2025. Colin Wilson, deputy government actuary, retired. A replacement is yet to be appointed. 

Houses of Parliament

House of Lords 

  • Lord Radice (Labour, life peer) retired from the House of Lords on 1 August. 
  • Baroness Blackstone (life peer) was Labour independent, now Labour. 

Devolved administrations

Welsh Government 

  • Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities – Dr Simon Brooks appointed as chair; Talat Chaudhri, Lowri Cunnington Wynn, Cynog Dafis, Meinir Ebbsworth, Delyth Evans, Dafydd Gruffydd, Myfanwy Jones, Shan Lloyd Williams, Cris Tomos and Rhys Tudur appointed as members. 
  • South Glamorgan Community Health Council – Robert Henley re-appointed as member for two years from 31 July until 30 July 2024; Shirley Willis and Stephen Nicholls re-appointed as members for two years from 30 September until 29 September 2024. 
  • North Wales Community Health Council – Myfanwy re-appointed as member for two years from 31 July until 30 July 2024; Dianne Gill re-appointed as member for two years from 31 August until 30 August 2024. 
  • Sport Wales – Rajma Begum, Dafydd Trystan Davies, Delyth Evans, Nicola Mead-Batten and Hannah Murphy re-appointed to the board for three years from 1 September. 

Local authorities

  • Cumberland Council – Andrew Seekings appointed as chief executive from 31 December; he is currently chief executive of Allerdale Borough Council and interim head of paid service for the Shadow Authority for Cumberland Council. The new unitary authority will cover the area that currently encompasses Allerdale Borough, Carlisle City Council and Copeland Borough councils. 
  • North Yorkshire Council – Richard Flinton named as the preferred candidate for chief executive of the new unitary council. Flinton is currently chief executive of North Yorkshire County Council which is set to be abolished and replaced with the new council next year. The appointment will be subject to the approval of the county council on 17 August.

  • Antibiotic Research UK – Jonathan Pearce appointed as chief executive from 1 August. 
  • Children’s Heart Federation – Anne Keatley-Clarke to retire as chief executive; she will remain as a short-term consult to mentor new chief executive Rajwant Kaur-Singh. 
  • Greenpeace UK – Areeba Hamid and Will McCallum appointed as joint executive directors. 
  • Royal Institute of British Architects – Muyiwa Oki elected as president for two years from 1 September 2023; he will become president-elect from 1 September. 
  • Royal Society of Architects in Wales – Darren Benham elected as president for two years from September 2023; he will become president-elect from 1 September.
