Transforming Government Through Digital Technology

As part of our ongoing series of round table discussions, Civil Service World and Sopra Steria, are hosting a round table on transforming government through digital technology.

In November, Chancellor George Osborne announced a massive increase in spending on digital transformation within government - £450m went to the Government Digital Service, out of a digital package worth £1.8bn up to 2020. The next five years will see a shift away from purely front-end to fully transformative digital projects.

But does the civil service possess the necessary capacity, skills and understanding needed to deliver digital transformation?

In March 2016 Dods Research and Sopra Steria conducted their second annual survey of civil servants. We asked for their views about the impact of this digital transformation agenda on government and the enablers and blockers to successful implementation. In this round table we plan to explore some of the key issues raised in the survey including:

Skills: A lack of digital training is considered the biggest blockage to digital transformation – what are the skills required and how can they be delivered?

Data: Civil servants routinely gather customer information, but are the majority getting the most out of it to help design services?

Measurement: With nearly two thirds of digital projects live or in progress, a quarter of civil servants report there is no consistently monitored measure of success
