The Department for International Development has appointed ITN deputy editor Tim Singleton as its new head of communications.

Singleton has been director of newsgathering for the broadcaster since 2013, and also took on the role of deputy editor at the start of last year. He has previously worked as ITV's head of foreign news, and has a career in journalism spanning more than two decades, including six years as news editor for Yorkshire Television.

Singleton said: "During my career in broadcasting I’ve seen first-hand the impact of global problems resulting from chronic poverty, conflict and natural disasters. I’ve worked alongside the best in the business at ITV News, and now look forward to doing the same with new colleagues at DfID."
