New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via our colleagues at Dods People

Government departments

  • Cabinet Office  Baroness Stuart of Edgbaston announced as the preferred candidate for first civil service commissioner. Pre-appointment scrutiny by the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee will follow shortly. Rosie Glazebrook to carry out the functions of First Commissioner until the vacancy is filled.
  • Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office – Gavin Cook OBE appointed Her Majesty's ambassador to the Republic of Peru from April 2022, in succession to Kate Harrisson.
  • Department of Health and Social Care – Julian Hartley appointed as a non-executive director.
  • Home Office: Security Industry Authority – Zoë Billingham appointed a non-executive director for three years from 6 December.
  • HM Treasury: Office for Budget Responsibility – Professor David Miles nominated for appointment to the Budget Responsibility Committee from 1 January 2022, subject to approval by the Treasury Committee.
  • Department for Work and Pensions: Industrial Injuries Advisory Council – Professor Damien McElvenny and Dr Gareth Walters appointed as independent members for five years from 1 December.
  • Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) – Ian Bauckham CBE appointed as chair. He has held the position of interim chair since January and will start his three-year position as permanent chair in the new year.

Houses of Parliament

  • House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee – The new chair will be elected from the Labour party; the nomination period will run until 14 December. Current nominees are: Rupa Huq, Dame Diana Johnson and Yasmin Qureshi.
  • Speaker's Committee on the Electoral Commission – Clive Betts and Michael Gove added; Stephen Barclay and William Wragg discharged.

House of Lords

  • Lord McKenzie of Luton (Lab, life peer) died on 2 December.
  • Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland Sub-committee – Lord Godson added.

Labour

Scottish Labour

  • Colin Smyth appointed shadow cabinet secretary for net zero, energy and transport; he also continues as shadow cabinet secretary for economic development and rural affairs.

Local authorities

  • Haringey Council – Andy Donald appointed as interim chief executive.
  • Horsham Council – Jonathan Chowen elected as council leader.
  • Uttlesford Council – Petrina Lees elected as council leader.
