Using human science and design thinking in delivering Government Services

As part of our ongoing series of round tables, Civil Service World and Cognizant will be discussing the cultural impact of digital transformation within government organisations; including discussing the use of human science as a tool on the digital design journey.

This discussion will take place on Wednesday 22nd March in Westminster, London. The event will run from 12.30 – 14.30 and lunch will be provided.

Automation through technology is at the heart of the current drive to make government more efficient. Allowing citizens to access public services can significantly reduce transaction and manpower costs, and much progress has been made in creating user-friendly online services. The government’s recent Transformation Strategy outlines a new focus for the years up to 2020 including data sharing and streamlining internal systems within government organisations.

In any digital transformation project, it can be easy to overlook the human factor in embedding new processes. Getting buy-in from those using online public services is vital to increasing take-up. We will discuss how human science can help civil servants understand, empathise with, and design for the people who matter the most to them – both citizens and civil servants.

Organised with the support of global business and digital services consultancy Cognizant, our round table will bring together civil servants to explore key areas of potential - as well as red lines that must not be crossed. The panel will discuss:

  • What approaches to designing digital projects are being used by government? What are their advantages and disadvantages?
  • Are all projects achieving their initial aims? How important is the design approaches seen to this?
  • What is the most useful information to gather about users?
  • How should that information be used to optimise the user journey?
  • What are the challenges to adopting a human science approach to design?
