Vince Cable has ignored the advice of the Commons’ Business, Innovation and Skills Committee and appointed Professor Les Ebdon as director of fair access to higher education.

Despite the committee voting against Ebdon’s appointment, Cable said he feels “confident” he’s picked the right candidate. However, he recommended Ebdon appear before the committee at regular intervals so they can assess his performance.
