The Treasury has promoted Clare Lombardelli to the post of director general, economics and chief economic advisor to replace Sir David Ramsden, who has joined the Bank of England.

Lombardelli takes up the role from her current post as the director of strategy, planning and budget at the Treasury, where she is the lead advisor to the chancellor on fiscal events, and is a member of the Treasury’s executive management board.

As the chief economic advisor, Lombardelli will manage the economics and fiscal groups in the Treasury, and act as co-head of the government economic service with Sam Beckett, the director general of international, growth and analysis at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. This is the first time there will be two female heads of the GES.
