Cabinet Office: £5bn to be saved

The government is on course to make around £5bn in savings in the year ending in March, Francis Maude has said. If the figure is achieved, it will bring the total saved since the election to £8.75bn.

To date, this financial year has seen £3.25bn in savings, made primarily through efficiency measures such as a £130m reduction in property costs and £1.1bn decrease in spend on consulting and temporary staff. The remaining £1.75bn is expected to come about as a result of uncovering waste in areas such as fraud, error and debt, according to the minister for the Cabinet Office.
