MPs attack FCO promotions

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office risks “widespread demotivation” because of changes to promotion systems at administrative grades, and should put more weight on language skills when promoting diplomatic staff, according to a Foreign Affairs Committee report published last week.

The report said that poor morale could damage the “pool of experience for administrative work overseas.” MPs also warned that not prioritising language skills in diplomatic promotions could damage the credibility of the diplomatic service.
