NAO warns on local growth agenda

The government’s vision for local growth, as set out in its 2010 white paper ‘Local growth: realising every place’s potential’, has “not been translated into measurable objectives against which to judge achievement and hold departments to account”, a report by the National Audit Office has warned.

The NAO report, ‘Funding and structures for local economic growth’, published last Friday, says that under current arrangements it is “not clear who in central government is ultimately responsible for the success of local growth policy”.

Local growth minister Kris Hopkins responded that government’s growth programmes are “supporting thousands of local businesses, securing billions in private sector investment, boosting skills and creating... much needed local jobs”.
