NHS reforms ‘disrupting’ savings

The NHS reforms set out in the government’s Health and Social Care Bill are “disrupting and distracting” the effort to make £20bn of savings over the next four years, according to a critical report published yesterday by the Commons Health Committee.

The “reorganisation process continues to complicate the push for efficiency gains,” says the report, and often “hinders the ability of organisations to consider truly effective ways of reforming service delivery and releasing savings.”

The report calls for greater integration of health and social care services, which “must be seen as two aspects of the same service and planned together in every area for there to be any chance of a high quality and efficient service”.

Committee chair Stephen Dorrell warned: “Both the NHS and local authorities are struggling to meet current targets”.
