Interim chief Martin Jones has position made permanent

Martin Jones has been made the permanent chief executive of the Parole Board for England and Wales.

Jones, who was previously head of the emerging prison estates strategy at the Ministry of Justice, was appointed to the Parole Board role on an interim basis in October last year.

He replaced Claire Bassett, who left the Parole Board to become chief executive of the Electoral Commission.

Parole Board chairman Nick Hardwick said Jones had “already had a big impact” on the independent body, which assesses the risk to the public posed by serving prisoners.

“He brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles across the criminal justice system, and I look forward to working with him as we continue to make significant progress in delivering the Parole Board’s important responsibilities,” he said.

Before his work on the prison estates strategy, Jones was head of sentencing policy at the Ministry of Justice, prior to which he worked for HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
