A Border Force officer has appeared in court after being charged with conspiring to import class-A drugs following an investigation by the National Crime Agency.

Syed Shah, aged 39, of Hodge Hill, Birmingham, was arrested by NCA officers at Birmingham Airport on Friday last week after the discovery of 25kgs of heroin in a suitcase belonging to 67-year-old Zahida Perveen, from Openshaw, Manchester.

Perveen was arrested shortly after arriving at the airport on a flight from Pakistan.

A third person, Shahid Butt, aged 52, from Saltley, in Birmingham, was also arrested in connection with the offence.

Shah, Perveen and Butt were all charged with conspiring to import class-A drugs. Shah and Butt also face money-laundering charges.

The three appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday.

Butt and Shah were remanded in custody; Perveen was granted bail.

Their case will now move to Birmingham Crown Court, with the next hearing due to take place towards the end of next month.
