Care split is ‘crazy’, says Lamb

The split between delivery of health and social care is “crazy” according to care and support minister Norman Lamb, who said that an ageing population is forcing government to re-think the way care is delivered.

Speaking at the launch of a report into the UK’s health system by think-tank Localis last week, Lamb described the current system as “completely fragmented,” adding: “We have institutionally separated physical health from mental health – crazy – and not in the interest of the patient.”

By 2030, he said, the number of people aged over 85 will have doubled – a trend he described as “extraordinary”, adding it “forces us to think fresh about how we do things, and think about new solutions”.

Up to 15 local areas will be selected this year to take part in a pilot integrating health and social care services.
