New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via our colleagues at Dods People

Government departments

  • Prime Minister’s Office: Ali Akbor OBE has been appointed to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry panel for Phase 2 of its work from 2 November.
  • Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy: Financial Reporting Council – Keith Skeoch has been appointed as interim chair from 12 October.
  • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Advisory Committee on Packaging – Deep Sagar announced as the new chair, replacing Phil Conran.
  • Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: David Ashley has been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Madagascar in succession to Dr Phil Boyle.
  • Government Equalities Office: Baroness Falkner of Margravine has been selected as the preferred candidate for chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission and will appear at a pre-appointment scrutiny hearing conducted by the Women and Equalities Select Committee and the Joint Committee on Human Rights in November.
  • Home Office: Michael Fuller has been appointed a non-executive director.
  • Ministry of Justice: Civil Procedure Rule Committee – Isabel Hitching QC and Tom Montagu-Smith QC have been appointed as legally qualified members for 3 years commencing 1 October.
  • Office of the Leader of the House of Lords: Law Officers: Keith Stewart QC has been appointed Advocate General for Scotland. He will also become a Life Peer.

Government agencies

  • Bank of England: Financial Policy Committee -  Elisabeth Stheeman reappointed as a member.

Local Authorities

  • Dundee City Council: Greg Colgan to replace David Martin as chief executive early next year.
  • Croydon Council: Tony Newman to stand down as leader of the council.
  • Salisbury City Council: Jeremy Nettle to stand down as leader of the council in November.
  • West Lindsey District Council: Giles McNeill to formally stand down as leader on 2 November.

Engage Britain: Francis Elliott to become director of advocacy,  leaving his role as political editor of The Times.

  • British Airways: Sean Doyle to replace Alex Cruz as chief executive.
  • National Express Group: Jose Ignacio Garat to become chief executive on 1 November, replacing Chris Davies who had been in the role on an interim basis.
