This year we mark the 20th anniversary of the Civil Service Awards. Over the past two decades, these awards have become a powerful way to shine a light on the people behind the policies, services, and innovations that make a real difference.
After more than 30 years in public service, including time in the NHS and over a decade in the Welsh Government civil service— I've had the privilege of guiding many teams through complex challenges, with our focus always on how best we can deliver for citizens.
That’s why I was proud to accept the role of co-champion for the Delivering for Citizens Award alongside Susanna McGibbon.
This award celebrates meaningful impact, where delivery has made a real difference to public services. We’re especially keen to see nominations that show smarter ways of working that improve outcomes for citizens, sustainable innovations backed by measurable results, and thoughtful use of public money leading to real benefits. For me, it’s about staying connected to why we do this work: to improve lives.
Whether it’s strengthening access to services, supporting communities through change, or finding new ways to meet people’s needs — this award celebrates those who go above and beyond to make government work better for everyone.
I’m looking forward to seeing the nominations and I’m sure there will be plenty, reflecting the excellent work I know is happening right across the UK.
You can nominate until 18 July, so you have some time to plan your answers. When writing, I’d encourage you to address both the core and main criteria. These help ensure you capture not just what was achieved, but how it was done — the values, behaviours, and impact that make the nomination complete. It’s that story that I and the judges will be looking for.
It’s important to me and to my counterparts and colleagues across the civil service to recognise the teams and individuals who have really made an impact. I know we all want to build a culture where success is seen, shared, and celebrated.
I am particularly proud that the spirit of these awards has taken root here in Wales. The Welsh Government introduced its own internal awards programme that’s having its own anniversary this year – 15 years. I know the work we do will shine on the UK stage too, and hope to see nominations from friends and colleagues in all categories.
For me, seeing the dedication of colleagues, the innovative solutions to complex problems, and the determination to support those most in need — that’s what makes me incredibly proud to be a civil servant. And it’s why I’m so pleased to be part of this year’s Civil Service Awards, recognising and celebrating your hard work. So please, get your nominations in and let your success shine.
