New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via our colleagues at Dods People

UK Government:

Prime Minister's Office

Munira Mirza has resigned as Director of Policy, Jack Doyle has resigned as Director of Communications, Dan Rosenfield has resigned as Chief of Staff, but will stay on while a successor is found and Martin Reynolds has resigned as Principal Private Secretary, but will stay on while a successor is found and then return to a role at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Advanced Research and Invention Agency – Dr Peter Highnam appointed as Chief Executive.

Competition Service – Jeremy Mayhew appointed as Member.

Cabinet Office

Andrew Griffith MP appointed as Parliamentary Secretary (Minister for Policy and Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit) on 3 February.

Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport

Advisory Council for National Records and Archives – Dr Nigel Fletcher, Sir David Natzler and Jonathan Scherbel-Ball appointed as Members for four years until 16 January 2026.

National Gallery – Diana Berry, Dounia Nadar and James Lambert appointed as Trustees for four years until 22 December 2025.

Tate – Anya Hindmarch CBE, Danny Rimer OBE, Howard Shore, Kwame Kwei-Armah OBE and Howard Shore appointed as Trustees for four years until 6 January 2026.

UK Sport – Annie Panter re-appointed as Board Member until 30 January 2026; Sally Bolton OBE re-appointed as Board Member from 7 March until 6 March 2026; Martyn Worsley re-appointed as Board Member from 12 March until 11 March 2026.

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

Julian Reilly appointed as Her Majesty's Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina from July, succeeding Matt Field who is transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment.

Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities

Angela Richardson MP resigned as PPS to Michael Gove as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations.

Northern Ireland Office

Marie Breen Smyth appointed as Independent Reviewer of National Security Arrangements in Northern Ireland for one year from 1 February.

Department for Transport

Rail Accident Investigation Branch – Andrew Hall appointed as Chief Inspector of Rail Accidents from 1 April, succeeding Simon E French OBE who is retiring on 31 March.

HM Treasury

Financial Conduct Authority – Penny James appointed as Chair of the Practitioner Panel from 1 March, succeeding Paul Feeney.

Houses of Parliament:

House of Commons

Anna Firth elected as MP for Southend West on 3 February, holding the seat for the Conservatives at the by-election with a majority of 12,280.

The Birmingham, Erdington by-election will take place on Thursday 3 March.

Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority – Lea Paterson appointed as Member for five years from 14 March.

House of Lords

Lord Coe (Conservative, life peer) retired from the House of Lords on 31 January.

Lord Rotherwick (Conservative, hereditary peer) retired from the House of Lords on 1 February; a hereditary peer by-election will be held in due course.

Lord Plant of Highfield (Labour, life peer) granted a leave of absence on 1 February.

Stephen Kinnock MP appointed Shadow Minister for Immigration.

Luke Pollard MP appointed Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces.

Ann Henderson has joined the National Executive Committee, replacing Laura Pidcock who resigned.

 

Devolved Administrations:

Scottish Government

Quality Meat Scotland – Sarah Millar appointed Chief Executive, succeeding Alan Clarke who will step down in April.

Welsh Government

Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales – Beverley Smith appointed as Chair from 1 February.

Northern Ireland Executive

Paul Givan MLA resigned as First Minister of Northern Ireland on 4 February; leading to Michelle O'Neill MLA losing the role of Deputy First Minister.

Ian Jeffers appointed as Commissioner for Victims and Survivors (CVS) for four years from 9 May.

Dame Brenda King re-appointed as Attorney General for Northern Ireland for three years until 30 June 2025.

Northern Health and Social Care Trust – Bob McCann re-appointed as Non-executive Chair until 19 January 2023.

North West Regional College – Gavin Killeen and Samuel McGregor’s term as Member of the Governing Body extended for six months until 30 June.

South West College – Gerard O'Hanlon and Michael Skuce’s term as Member of the Governing Body extended for six months until 30 June.

Charity Commission for Northern Ireland – Alan Hunter appointed to the Board for five years from 1 February.

 

Local Authorities:

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council – Ken Rhatigan (Conservative) has resigned as Council Leader.

Lambeth Council – Andrew Travers will stand down as Chief Executive in June.
