Sarah Healey has received a damehood in the King’s Birthday honours.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government permanent secretary becomes a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath – which recognises the work of senior military officials and civil servants.

Fellow permanent secretary-level civil servant, Madeleine Alessandri, the Joint Intelligence Committee chair, has also been awarded a damehood, with both officials recognised for their contribution to public service.

Former Foreign Office permanent secretary Philip Barton - who was already a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George - was awarded the highest honour possible within this order, a Knight Grand Cross.

Peter Lauener, former chief executive of the Education and Skills Funding Agency, has also been awarded top recognition in the King’s Birthday Honours, receiving a knighthood for services to education.

Healey, Alessandri and Lauener are among scores of civil servants recognised in King Charles’ third birthday honours.

The honour of Companion of the Order of the Bath, which recognises distinguished service in the civil service and the military, went to seven current and former civil servants. Those listed include Sarah Harrison, chief operating officer at the Cabinet Office, for services to government productivity and regulatory excellence, and Philip Douglas, director general at Border Force, for services to border security and public service.

Five civil servants received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which is awarded for having a prominent role at national or regional level. Those awarded a CBE include Janet Hughes, director, farming and countryside programme at Defra, who takes up her cross-government post as director general for civil service reform this month. Hughes was recognised for her contribution to public service.
