Coalition boosts tsar recruitment

The coalition has appointed more tsars per year than the Labour government did, research by King’s College London has revealed.

This government has named more than 90 public appointees charged with representing particular interests within government since 2010, equating to 43 per year. Meanwhile, the Labour government appointed a total of 130 tsars between 2005 and 2010 – 26 per year.

Of the 240, 84 per cent have been men, and 83 per cent over 50.
