The Department for International Trade is offering an annual pay packet of up to £85,000 for a senior leader to help use data to inform trade and investment decisions.
The DIT is recruiting for a chief data officer, a role that will form part of the department’s senior leadership team. The chosen candidate will be tasked with offering “expert advice on data issues” to ministers and senior departmental officials – including permanent secretary Antonia Romeo.

The CDO will “lead on development of data-driven insights that help support exploitation of strategic and tactical business opportunities, and be a champion for a data-driven, decision-making culture”. They will also be expected to “drive data innovation and use of new techniques to exploit data, create common taxonomies and open datasets to enhance DIT trade and investment facilitation, policy and negotiation activity”.
Key programmes of work to be led by the data chief will include developing the department’s bespoke “Data Hub” and integrating it with other technology and data platforms. The successful applicant will also be expected to “identify new kinds, types, and sources of external and international data to drive business innovation throughout DIT”.
Helping data and analysis professionals work better together will be a key remit of the CDO, as will driving collaboration with other Whitehall departments.
The post, which is based in London, comes with a salary of between £68,000 and £85,000. Applications are open until midnight on 5 December.
