The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is looking to hire two interior designers to work on embassy refurbishment projects and staff housing schemes around the world.
The jobs, at senior executive officer and higher executive officer grade, have a salary range of £25,425 to £43,272 plus a London allowance of £4,520 a year – but candidates are explicitly told they need to be flexible enough to “travel overseas at short notice for up to a week at a time”.
Applicant packs for the jobs state the roles are within FCO Services’ Professional Services Centre and will involve covering “a wide range of interior design projects and programmes for diplomatic buildings around the world” involving both new-build projects and refurbishment work.

“The types of projects you’ll be working on will involve residential as well as workplace design and will include both historical and contemporary elements,” a description of the roles says.
“There will be a special focus, however, on designated residences of architectural and historical significance.”
The blurb describes the jobs as being subject to rapidly-changing requirements from the FCO, meaning that successful candidates work in “an ideal environment for honing technical expertise” on unique projects while building experience with the design and construction industry across a broad range of cultures.
Both roles require a degree in interior design, or an equivalent qualification in three-dimensional design.
For the more senior role – the C5 senior executive officer – candidates are warned they will need “a full understanding of traditional and contemporary furnishing techniques, along with knowledge of architectural history and the ability to work with care and sensitivity in historical contexts”.
The junior role requires for proficiency in AutoCad or Revit and expertise in colour and decoration.
January 31 is the application deadline for both jobs.
