The union, whose strike ballot attracted a 28 per cent turnout, says it has called the strike because the government has declined talks over pay, pensions and working conditions.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said there will be a series of further strikes – some all-member, and others sector-specific.

A Cabinet Office spokesman called Serwotka’s move a “futile action which benefits no one”.
