Funded by a £3.8m grant, the institute was established by GCHQ with the Research Councils’ Global Uncertainties Programme; the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills; and the Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance.

It involves seven universities, and brings together academics and industry to develop the government’s cyber security strategy under a remit to: tackle cyber crime; make the UK more secure and resilient to cyber attack; develop a more open and safe cyberspace for the public; and build skills and capability to support cyber security objectives.
