New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via Dods People

UK government

  • Department for Business and Trade: Competition Appeal Tribunal – Andrew Taylor, Antony Woodgate, Hugh Kelly, Ioannis Kokkoris, Ioannis Lianos, Keith Derbyshire and Lesley Farrell appointed to the panel of ordinary members from 10 January.
  • Department for Culture, Media and Sport: Anti-Doping Agency – Ama Agbeze and Nicola Shannon appointed as board members for four years. British Film Institute – Jay Hunt appointed as chair for four years from 16 February.
  • Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Dr Margaret Bates appointed as head for the UK Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) for Packaging Scheme Administrator for two years from 2025. Animal Welfare Committee – Dr Romain Pizzi, Dr Pen Rashbass, Professor Sarah Wolfensohn and Dr James Yeates re-appointed as members for four years from 1 January. DEFRA board – Chris Tyas appointed as non-executive board member for three years.
  • Department for Transport: Cranston Inquiry – Sir Ross Cranston appointed as chair.
  • HM Treasury: Prudential Regulation Committee – John Taylor reappointed as a member for three years from 14 January 2024. Antony Jenkins reappointed as a member for three years from 5 April 2024. Tanya Castell reappointed as a member for three years from 1 September 2024.
  • Department for Work and Pensions: Pensions Ombudsman – Anthony Arter appointed as interim chair.

Non-Ministerial Departments

  • Government Economic Service – Sam Beckett appointed as sole head of the Government Economic Service.
  • The Charity Commission – Will Lifford reappointed for three years from 18 January.

  • A writ was also moved on 11 January for a by-election will take place to elect a new MP for Wellingborough – which will take place on 15 February.

House of Lords

  • Lord Skidelsky (Crossbench, life peer) returned from suspension on 22 December 2023.
  • Resignation Peerages December 2023: Matthew Elliott (political strategist and formerly chief executive of Vote Leave); Jon Moynihan (formerly chief executive and executive chairman of PA Consulting Group; formerly chairman of Vote Leave); and Ruth Porter (deputy chief of Staff to the former Prime Minister in 2022)

Devolved Administrations

Welsh Government

  • National Library of Wales – Rhodri Llwyd Margan appointed as chief executive.

Northern Ireland Executive

  • Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs – Shane Lynch appointed as non-executive board member to the departmental board for three years from 1 January.
  • Libraries NI – Bonnie Anley appointed as chair from 1 January until 31 December 2027.
  • Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners – Ryan McCready appointed as chair of the board for four years from 1 January.
  • Maze Long Kesh Development Corporation – Mark Adrian, Diana Fitzsimmons, Áine Gallagher, Kevin Gamble, Cathy Gormley-Heenan and Maurice Johnston appointed for five years.
  • Northern Ireland Environment Agency – David Reid appointed as chief executive.
  • Western Health and Social Care Trust – Dr Aideen McGinley appointed as non-executive (lay) director from 1 January until 31 December 2027; Brian Telford appointed as non-executive (finance) director from 1 January until 31 December 2027.

Local Authorities

  • City of Edinburgh Council – Andrew Kerr to retire as chief executive on 14 June.
  • Neath Port Talbot Council – Karen Jones to retire as chief executive in late 2024.
  • Southampton City Council – Mike Harris to stand down as chief executive this month.
