Department for Work and Pensions staff have saved 19 minutes per day on average in a trial where they used Microsoft 365 Copilot to help with routine tasks.
A six-month trial of the paid version of the generative AI tool took place from October 2024 to March 2025, with 3,549 DWP staff taking part.
An evaluation of the trial found evidence of improved task efficiency, work quality and job satisfaction, with 73% reporting better quality outputs and 65% feeling more fulfilled at work.
The trial focused on corporate staff in central office roles, with frontline operational colleagues, such as those working in Jobcentres not included.
Nine in 10 users reported that Copilot helped them work more efficiently. The greatest time savings came from searching for information, writing emails, and summarising documents.
Staff redirected this time towards higher-value activities such as strategic planning, project delivery, and mentoring colleagues.
The evaluation also highlighted benefits for neurodivergent staff, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, and speech and language communication needs. For example, users with ADHD reported that Copilot helped them maintain focus in busy environments, while those with communication needs found it easier to find the right words when drafting messages.
Participants in the trial emphasised that while the AI tool enhanced their work, it should complement rather than replace professional judgement.
Copilot was not used to make decisions or replace staff, and full benefits were realised when combined with appropriate training, guidance and continued human oversight.
Andrew Western, minister for transformation at DWP, said: “This trial showed what's possible when we embrace new technology thoughtfully. We'll continue to harness AI to drive efficiency across the civil service – responsibly, with proper training, and always as a tool to support our people.”
Darren Hardman, chief executive, Microsoft UK & Ireland, said: “This trial shows how Microsoft 365 Copilot can help DWP employees spend less time on routine admin and more time delivering better outcomes. It's great to see Copilot enabling greater impact in the public sector.
“Copilot turns minutes saved into impact delivered, connecting people with the knowledge and workflows they need in seconds. We’re proud to support DWP as it scales responsible AI with the right training and governance.”
Microsoft 365 Copilot is a conversational chat interface capable of searching for specific information and generating text and summaries. The licenced version requires a paid subscription and is integrated into Microsoft 365 applications, providing enhanced features, including access to organisational data, advanced security, and compliance capabilities. The free version of Microsoft 365 Copilot has been available to all DWP staff since April 2025.
