Keir Starmer has confirmed that Aberdeen will be the host city for the government's Great British Energy company, which is set to see investment of £8.3bn over the course of the current parliament.

Sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the company will be tasked with investing in clean, home-grown energy.

While DESNZ had previously confirmed that the GB Energy would be headquartered in Scotland, it declined to endorse reports earlier this month that said Aberdeen – where the department has its second headquarters – had been selected as the host city.

Starmer told the Labour Party conference yesterday that GB Energy "could only really ever be based in one place in Scotland".

"So today, I can confirm that the future of British energy will be powered as it has been for decades, by the talent and skills of the working people in the Granite City with GB Energy based in Aberdeen," he said.

DESNZ added that two further GB Energy sites will open in Edinburgh and Glasgow, "to benefit from local skills and expertise". The department said GB Energy would operate from existing government buildings "initially", while permanent bases are established.

Former Siemens UK chief executive Juergen Maier has been appointed as start-up chairman of GB Energy. An interim chief executive is due to be appointed "soon", according to DESNZ.
