The full shortlist for the 14th annual Civil Service Awards has been unveiled.

Covering more than a dozen categories, the awards salute a range of achievements – including inspirational leadership; citizenship; communications and engagement; diversity and inclusion; and policy and use of evidence. The awards’ Rising Star category, meanwhile, recognises those who have made a significant impact within the first eight years of their civil service career.

The 2019 shortlist includes the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ Commercial EU Exit Team, established early last year to provide to support to the department’s large and diverse Brexit-related portfolio of 55 projects, around half of which had commercial requirements. The 30-strong team ensured all of the required services were successfully and compliantly procured to ensure the department’s readiness for all EU-exit scenarios. It is one of three teams vying for the Commercial Award,

Elsewhere, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Troubled Families Evaluation and Policy Team is shortlisted for the Innovation & Science Award. The team’s 2019 shortlisting recognises impact evaluation undertaken this year as “one of the most complex ever attempted in social policy” and a “landmark study in terms of its methodological sophistication”.

In the running for the Rising Star Award is the Department for International Trade’s Cindy Kim, who joined the UKTI team at the British Embassy in Seoul in June 2014 and has been credited with securing almost £150m in export wins. Her nomination cites her “unflappable commitment, common sense and tremendous appetite for learning” as well as her ability to leverage an incredible range of contacts” when required.

Tasked with agreeing winners from the 50 finalist individuals and teams is a panel of judges that includes Ministry of Justice perm sec Sir Richard Heaton; Department for Transport perm sec Bernadette Kelly; Northern Ireland Department of Finance perm sec Sue Gray; and new National Audit Office head Gareth Davies.

Heaton, who is the Civil Service Awards Champion, said the event was chance to celebrate the “phenomenal array of talented individuals doing amazing work” that the civil service counted among its ranks

“We want to thank and recognise our colleagues for their brilliant public service,” he said.

“Thank you to everyone who put in a nomination. We received more than 1,200 nominations, and together they tell a story of hard work, incredible commitment and unwavering values.

“I also want to thank our judges, who have had the difficult task of producing our shortlist.

“Congratulations to those who have made it to the shortlist, I look forward to meeting them at the awards ceremony.”

Winners will be announced at this year's awards ceremony – run by CSW's parent company Dods – which takes place on November 21 at Lancaster House.
